Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 3.5/4 --
While viewers' reactions will likely vary greatly, Lupino refuses to take sides, and the result is a film that exists in a surprising moral gray area rarely seen in 1953.

From the Front Row
A splendid, heartless, virtuoso's performance it is again, larger than life and larger, too, than the film in which it finds itself.

The Spectator
Lupino's treatment of an adulterous husband is so even-handed, so sympathetic, you don't just feel for him; you understand him.

Rating: 2/5 --
Poorly cast and plotted, but still weirdly interesting.
Film Threat
Drags its all-star cast through soap-opera melodramatics of a very high order.

The surprisingly modern-seeming ending casts some shadow onto easy conclusions.

Got trapped in a ridiculous deep-freeze as if trying its best to make the bigamist into an Albert Schweitzer.

Description by OLDIES.com:
A couple, having grown apart after they are unable to conceive a child of their own, decides to adopt. But things take a troubling turn when the adoption agency conducts a background check and discovers the husband leading a double life with another family in L.A. British-born Ida Lupino both acts and directs here, one of the first women in Hollywood to do so (she would go on to write, too). The impressive cast also features Academy Award winners Joan Fontaine and Edmond O'Brien, as well as Edmund Gwenn.
