Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 4/5 --
Weird, poetic, deliberately pretentious drama from Capra.
Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)
Rating: 55/100 --
An odd duck to be sure: substantially darker than the other Capra films I've seen, with a Chinese civil war and firing squads serving as the backdrop for a love story that never really comes together.

If any Hollywood film from the '30s is positively begging to be rediscovered...this is it.

Antagony & Ecstasy
Rating: 3.5/5 --
The 'bitter tea' of the title is, of course, a not so veiled allusion to the cup of suffering that Christ asks to be taken from him but to which he says "not my will, but yours be done."

Description by OLDIES.com:
At the height of the Chinese Civil War, American missionary Megan Davis (Barbara Stanwyck) arrives in Shanghai to marry another missionary, Robert Strike (Gavin Gordon). As soon as she arrives, however, the couple must save a group of orphans from a fire. Injured and separated from her fiance, Megan is rescued and taken to the home of General Yen (Nils Asther). While Megan and the general grow closer, one of the general's concubines seems to be secretly working for Yen's enemies.

The Bitter Tea of General Yen-A Historic Film!
Movie Lover: ROBERT VELEZ from
BRONX, NY US -- October, 18, 2015
Two facts must be addressed when discussing this important film! First, this film was the opening feature for the new Radio City Music Hall in New York way back in 1932! Secondly, this film was the first to deal with the theme of interacial love which was practically forbidden back in the 1930's! The Bitter Tea of General Yen was way ahead of its time despite not being a box office success! Barbara Stanwyck and Nils Asther act very well together and their screen chemistry is outstanding! Finally, this movie is essential viewing for those Frank Capra's fans out there who can't get enough of this great director!
