Rating: 3.5/4 -- a marvelous cinematic fantasy, easily the best of the six films Josef von Sternberg produced with star Marlene Dietrich for Paramount between 1930 and 1935. Full Review

The bizarre stop-go cadences of the dialogue delivery are the most blatantly non-naturalistic element, but the overall design and dramatic pacing are equally extraordinary. Full Review

More action oriented than the other Dietrich-Sternberg films, this 1932 production is nevertheless one of the most elegantly styled. Full Review

The film has compensating strength in the star, who photographs more beautifully than before and, though she is acted off the screen by Anna May Wong, shows herself unique in Hollywood by being majestically beautiful. Full Review

The alibi that the film is 'just melodrama' is puerile. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

One of the most famous and influential star-director collaborations in the history of cinema, Marlene Dietrich and Josef von Sternberg made seven features together which immortalized the actress as a glamorous and enigmatic movie siren while confirming the directors reputation as a supreme stylist of mood, atmosphere and eroticism through his dazzling command of the medium. Set against the backdrop of a Chinese civil war, SHANGHAI EXPRESS is an opulent romantic adventure that focuses on a diverse group of passengers traveling by express train from Peking to Shanghai. Among them is Captain Doc Harvey (Clive Brook), who finds himself, reunited with his former lover, now an infamous adventuress who calls herself Shanghai Lily (Marlene Dietrich). Desire and deception follow, culminating in a tense hostage situation when their train is hijacked by a Chinese warlord.
