The House of Bernarda Alba

Bernarda Alba (Irene Gutirrez Caba) is a widower with five fully-grown female children. Deciding that her offspring should suffer alongside her when the crestfallen Bernada's husband dies, she locks them in the family home for eight years, forbidding them to leave. Finally allowing her eldest daughter, Angustias (Enriqueta Caballeira), some freedom, Bernada grants her wish to court the nobleman Pepe el Romano (Álvaro Quiroga). But the consequences of their relationship are keenly felt throughout the family, especially when the other man-starved daughters also fall for the delectable charms of Pepe. A claustrophobic slice of drama from director Mario Camus (THE COLOR OF THE CLOUDS), THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA offers an unusual portrayal of a beleaguered family as they attempt to pick up the pieces of their lives in an unorthodox, yet moving fashion.
