Rating: 5/5 -- If characters in a horror movie are watching an old black and white movie on TV late at night, and it's not Night Of The Living Dead, it's almost certainly Carnival Of Souls. Full Review

Harvey leaves enough questions unanswered in this twilight zone to ensure that Carnival Of Souls enjoys a haunting afterlife in the viewer's mind. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/4 -- One of those unique horror movies where the low budget, gritty footage and rough performances combine to create not only an unsettling atmosphere of dread but also a study of existential angst in the face of unimaginable horror. Full Review

Occasionally a feature film emerges from the midwest, although this is the first ever out of Lawrence, Kans, where a group of commercial film pros veered off into a try at producing theatrical entertainment. Full Review

There is a nightmare quality to its best scenes, but the film is essentially a great half-hour Twilight Zone padded out to feature length. Full Review

The workmanlike approach only serves to highlight its spectral qualities. It's like a kitchen sink version of 'The Shining.' Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Carnival of Souls is a 1962 American independent horror film shot in Lawrence, Kansas and Salt Lake City, and is occasionally screened at Halloween festivals and has a huge cult following. In Kansas,Mary Henry (Candace Hilligoss) is riding in a car with two other young women when some men challenge them to a drag race. As they speed along a bridge, their car plunges into the river. The police search for bodies, but only Mary surfaces, but cannot remember how she survived. Mary then moves to Salt Lake City where she takes a job as a church organist. Mary rents a room and begins experiencing terrifying episodes of becoming invisible and inaudible to the world around her. She has visions of a pasty-faced figure, simply referred to as 'The Man' and begins seeing 'The Man' while playing the church organ. Mary's music drifts off from playing a church hymn to eerie music and seeing 'The Man' along with other ghoulish figures. The ghostly visions keep occurring and the fright continues to the very end when a surprise discovery by the police where the original drag race took place will leave you baffled. This is a classic, cult horror film which you will not soon forget.
