Concertante / Black Cake: Hans Van Manen

Modern dance choreographer Hans van Manen infuses his pieces with a politics of sexual difference. The two pieces on this video, "Concertante" and "Black Cake," are both illuminating physical explorations of gender conventions and male-female relationships. Filmed at Munich's Prinzeregententheater, "Concertante" has male and female dancers posturing as upper-class ballroom goers, while "Black Cake" cultivates a tenser, more aggressive confrontation between the sexes.
