Rating: 2/4 -- Director Dirk Shafer and co-writer Greg Hinton ride the dubious divide where gay porn reaches for serious drama.
San Diego Union-Tribune
May 31, 2002
Mostly, Shafer and co-writer Gregory Hinton lack a strong-minded viewpoint, or a sense of humor. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- Like most movies about the pitfalls of bad behavior ... Circuit gets drawn into the party. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- Kitschy, flashy, overlong soap opera.

Rating: 2.5/5 -- The film itself is about something very interesting and odd that would probably work better as a real documentary without the insinuation of mediocre acting or a fairly trite narrative. Full Review

What's most memorable about Circuit is that it's shot on digital video, whose tiny camera enables Shafer to navigate spaces both large ... and small ... with considerable aplomb. Full Review

...Dirk Shafer's lively CIRCUIT is at once a sexy soap opera, at times lurid and bathetic, and also a gritty cautionary tale made by a filmmaker honest enough to have it both ways...

Product Description:

After he's outed at his Midwestern precinct, gay cop John (Jonathan Wade Drahos) heads to Los Angeles to stay with his cousin Tad (Daniel Kucan), a documentary filmmaker chronicling the local gay scene. Naïve and closeted for a little too long, John only needs one little sniff and he's totally sucked into the world of "circuit" parties, drug-fueled gay raves full of steamy sex, thumping disco, steroid-amped bodies, and soap opera-style interpersonal drama. Soon his life is spiraling out of control and it's time to learn some valuable lessons.

Ex-Playgirl centerfold Dirk Shafer directs CIRCUIT from a script he wrote with producer Gregory Hinton. There's lots of drug use, vanity, angst, groping, and softcore sex (bed sheets and shadows mask total full frontal nudity). Kiersten Warren adds some estrogen and humor as John's college pal who has also come to L.A. to pursue her career as a stand-up comic. Jim J. Bullock (TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT) appears as a drag queen, William Katz and Nancy Allen are married party promoters caught up in a scam involving AIDS and life insurance. Many of the scenes were filmed at actual circuit parties (including the notorious "White Party"), with the attendees acting as extras.
