Rating: 3/4 -- (An) over-reliance on jump-scares does the film no favors... the cast, plot, and music pull together a creepy and atmospheric story with real consequences, light humor where appropriate, and champions adherence to the genre rules. Full Review

Rating: 2.5/5 -- Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Cricket Brown do their best to elevate the material, but The Unholy falls into too many familiar trappings to be anything more than an entertaining, albeit occasionally scary, diversion. Full Review

Has an intriguing premise but cuts too many corners in its catechism. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- The Unholy is not designed to be deep, but since glimmers of depth are present, the lack of follow-up makes this a disappointing watch. Full Review

Instead of pairing an exploration of the dangers of having faith without question with demonic bumps and jumps, The Unholy embraces cliches with the same passion that satan stereotypically has for fire. Full Review

It has some excellent jump-scares...

Rating: D+ -- The Unholy has the stately aura (and endless speechifying) of a sermon, but it's really a creaky nothing of a B-movie, like a chintzy Halloween exhibit set up inside an old church. Full Review

Product Description:

This gothic horror film written and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos is based on the novel SHRINE by James Herbert. It follows the supernatural abilities of a young girl named Alice (Cricket Brown) who despite previously having various impairments is now able to speak, hear and cure the sick thanks to an alleged visit from the Virgin Mary. Keen to cover the story and get his career back on track, journalist Gerry Fenn (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) starts to investigate; but it isn't long before things begin to unravel as a more sinister truth starts to emerge. Cary Elwes and Katie Aselton co-star.
