When it comes to revealing something new about its subject, "Stardust" sadly lacks insight into the art.

Imagine the film First Man if it neglected to include the moon landing. Pollock without painting. Or The Queen's Gambit if they'd decided not to show any chess.

The portrayal of Bowie is trying to the viewer. His character is either a stumbling, fumbling, fawn-eyed space cadet or an articulate, erudite conversationalist, depending on Range's whim.

As Bowie takes everything in - the dingy motel rooms, the unappreciative audience - his expressions convey the obvious: he wishes this was better. It is hard not to have the same reaction to "Stardust."

Product Description:
Directed by Gabriel Range, this biopic focuses on iconic rock star David Bowie (Johnny Flynn) when he was 24 years old and on the verge of global stardom. In 1971, David finds himself visiting America but unable to perform concerts due to visa blunders. His American record label sent their publicist Ron (Marc Maron) to set him up with press interviews across the country instead. As the two get to know each other during the trip, David slowly patches together bits and pieces of what would later become the future glam rock alter ego of his, named Ziggy Stardust. Jena Malone co-stars.
