There's exactly one image in the film that reflects a modicum of directorial imagination... Full Review

Portrayed with poise and resilience by Rooney Mara, she’s an initially compelling figure who appears in virtually every scene, whether enraptured by the sermons of Jesus, tending to the starving victims of Roman oppression, or defiantly tackling the jealousy of the other disciples, primarily the put-out Peter.

4 stars out of 5 -- Rooney Mara plays the title character with a quiet delicacy, often observant as Mary finds a place in the world and a cause in which to place her profound empathy.

Mary Magdalene presents a feminist defense of Mary and more shading to Jesus's other apostles, but its particular method of world-building does little in terms of impact. Full Review

Product Description:

Set during the first century C.E, Mary Magdalene (Rooney Mara) travels from the small and traditional fishing village where she grew up in the Holy Land to join a groundbreaking social movement led by the intoxicating Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). As her interest in the movement and Jesus himself develops, Mary discovers Jesus' fate is already decided leading her to commit herself further to this new religious movement. Directed by Garth Davis, written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett.
