Thomas Vinterberg, usually so good at stripping his characters down to their barest states, doesn't feel like a good fit for the material.

La Jornada
Rating: 3/5 --
As a film, Kursk could have wound up much worse, though it has uneven visual effects and goes in for some frankly puzzling decisions, such as a bizarre switch-up in aspect ratios when the sub gets underway.

Even when it occasionally falters, it is polished, heartbreaking, and worthy of attention.

Product Description:
Based on a real story. The Command recounts the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster. The film tells the story of the Russian nuclear submarine as it's sinking to the bottom of the Barents Sea and the sailors fighting to survive it. Officer Mikhail Kalekow (Matthias Schoenaerts) is part of the crew that is still alive and waiting for rescue. However, the rescue mission seems hindered by politics and bureaucracy among Russia, France, Norway and Britain, with the latter's navy chief (Colin Firth) trying to convince Russia to receive foreign aid.
