Entertainment Reviews:
Not the most frightening or memorable horror film to come out of the 1930s, but inventive in its early and idiosyncratic use of color and in its remarkable set design.

Not Coming to a Theater Near You
Rating: 6/10 --
...it is the film's dark, shadowy look, an obvious carryover from the German Expressionism of the previous decade, that contributes most to its effectiveness.

Movie Metropolis
Rating: 2/5 --
O technicolor de duas cores e a influência clara do expressionismo alemão criam belas imagens e uma boa atmosfera, mas a trama é ridícula e o personagem de Tracy é irritante e parece ter saído de um cartoon.
Cinema em Cena
Rating: C+ --
Disappoints as it plays like your average Charlie Chan crime thriller with some rather lame comic relief, a hardly puzzling mystery story and mostly stilted acting.

Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews
Rating: 3/4 --
Doctor X is notable for a number of reasons, including the use of early two-strip Technicolor and the impressive Max Factor makeup.

Creative Loafing
Rating: 5/5 --
Over-the-top in its own right, and it's all wrapped in German Expressionist sets and shadows enhanced by the otherworldly look of early two-color Technicolor.

Product Description:
When the moon is full, a murderer stalks the streets of New York. The trail of carnage seems to lead to a mad scientist (Lionel Atwill) who conducts grisly experiments under the roof of his surgical research laboratory. Lee Taylor (Lee Tracey), a canny journalist, tries to unravel the mystery before the killer can strike again.
Atwill gives a skin-crawling performance as Doctor Xavier, the one-armed wacko who has discovered a synthetic flesh that he uses to create body parts. Fay Wray is delightfully naive as Joanne Xavier, the lab boss's daughter (and the reporter's heartthrob). Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA) directed this gripping whodunit--based on the play by Howard W. Comstock and Allen C. Miller--that strikes a thrilling balance between comedy and horror. Making classic use of high-contrast lighting, intricate sets, and a pioneering two-color Technicolor process, DOCTOR X is packed with atmosphere and visual inventiveness.
