Entertainment Reviews:
Rating: 3/5 --
Better than people give it credit for, especially if the viewer fully appreciates the gay subtext.

...Barker's specialty, in this film as in the HELLRAISER series, is a bloody finale with lots of special effects, and this time he outdoes himself...

Gruesome but somewhat intelligent supernatural thriller.

High concept, wavering script, completely weird.

Sadly, with Lord of Illusions, Clive Barker stumbles into the same pitfalls he did when he made Nightbreed just five years earlier. It's dull, unengaging, and features a plot that is stretched out far past its breaking point.

...LORD is more sophisticated and satisfying than anything the genre has offered since WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE....The craftsmen responsible for the grisly makeup and special effects perform far beyond the call of duty...
Variety
Rating: 3/4 --
Barker, who directed as well as wrote, establishes an effective rhythm in these scenes, and Bakula finds just the right note to play them.

Product Description:
Thirteen years ago, cultist Philip Swan murdered his group's leader, an evil prophet named Nix who possessed unparalleled skills in black magic. Then he hid the body -- very well.
Now a successful magician in his own right, Swann finds himself stalked by Nix's followers, who want Nix's corpse so they can bring it back to life. Swann's wife Dorothea, aware of the dangers facing her husband, hires hard-boiled detective Harry D'Amour to watch over Philip. Soon D'Amour becomes deeply embroiled in the dark, unstable world of the supernatural, where nefarious illusionists, strange conjurings, creepy cultists, and the mysterious Mrs. Swann all turn his life into a living nightmare.
