Rating: 3/5 -- The atmospheric photography and solid acting make this worth seeing - not least for the unexpected sight of Jennifer Garner throwing some memorable wobblies as the twins' furiously neurotic mother. Full Review

Monroe, best known for her work in IT FOLLOWS, is tough and committed, and Jennifer Garner’s portrayal of a mad housewife sprinting to a meltdown is acute...

It is the film’s great fortune that the Masons are portrayed by an exceptional team of actors, starting with Ms. Monroe, who is the calm eye at the center of the storm. The bellows of this tempest come from Ms. Garner, who ably depicts the demanding neediness of the vulnerable matriarch.

TRIBES boasts a unique texture of its own -- a hazy, sun-kissed kind of soft focus that suggests faded Polaroid photographs and formative moments half-remembered.

Product Description:

A teenage girl (Maika Monroe) and her family move from the Midwest to an affluent Southern California community. She soon learns to surf, which gives her the solace she needs to deal with her parents' crumbling marriage and the toll it takes on her brother (Cody Fern). Brendan and Emmett Malloy directed this family drama, which was adapted from the novel by Joy Nicholson. Jennifer Garner, Justin Kirk, and Noah Silver co-star.
