3.5 stars out of 4 -- [A] stunner of a movie....[An] intimate love story that manages to be hilarious and heartbreaking, often at the same time.
Rolling Stone
Rating: 5/5 --
Keeps sentimentality at a minimum, and takes its potential cliches (the rich hellraiser, the gay butler) and finds something fresh in them.

Rating: 3.5/4 --
This stunner of a movie is so far under the radar you'll have to go to HBO to find it. Get crackin'. It's the hip antidote to multiplex junk such as Mad Money and Meet the Spartans.
Rolling Stone
Rating: 3/5 --
Bernard and Doris is a fun enough diversion, but it's wishy-washy and doesn't dig dive enough into comedy, tragedy, sympathy, suspense, or anything else to make it ultimately memorable.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Susan Sarandon stars as tobacco billionairess Doris Duke in this touching and entertaining HBO Film, inspired by Duke's relationship with her gay butler, Bernard Lafferty (Ralph Fiennes), to whom she bequeathed her entire fortune.
Product Description:
It made headlines when tobacco heiress Doris Duke died, leaving her Irish butler in charge of her billion-dollar estate. Insider squabbles and a string of lawsuits followed, but the relationship between the two people from opposite worlds remained a mystery. Inspired by their intriguing true story, this original HBO production imagines the evolving relationship between Doris and her butler, Bernard Lafferty, with Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes in the title roles. Over six years the film traces Bernard and Doris slowly growing closer together and nourishing a love that surpasses the obstacles of alcoholism, wealth, and the pain of the past.
