Entertainment Reviews:
[The] ever-more-twisty journeys manage to keep GENERATION WAR involving for nearly five hours straight.
Hollywood Reporter
Rating: B --
Think of the ambitious 'Generation War' as a German-language 'Friends' in which the five close pals encounter rape, death squads and the brutality of war while constantly fending off lethal bands of mad Russians at the dawn of World War II.

It's an involving story and an intriguing view of history.
St. Paul Pioneer Press
Rating: 1.5/4 --
I suppose everything that occurs in "Generation War" is factually possible, even when it's not based on fact. But weirdly little of it feels historically plausible, at least to one foreigner's eyes and ears.
Chicago Tribune
Apart from the bizarre coincidences (how often can five friends cross paths on a battlefield stretching all the way from Poland to the northeast of the Ukraine?), Generation War has other typical marks of TV melodrama.

Movie Habit
Though director Philipp Kadelbach and screenwriter Stefan Kolditz do touch on moral ambiguities ... they settle comfortably into glib ironies, bittersweet platitudes, and sentiment passing as tragedy.

Product Description:
Five young German friends find their lives torn apart when Adolf Hitler plunges Europe into war in this epic miniseries from director Philipp Kadelbach (HINDENBURG). Called to serve his country when fighting erupts on the eastern front, decorated officer Willhelm (Volker Bruch) races off to the battlefield alongside his nervous younger sibling Friedhelm (Tom Schilling). Meanwhile, hopeful that her true love Wilhelm will soon return to her, optimistic nurse Charlotte (Miriam Stein) opts to serve in the Red Cross. But the horrors Charlotte witnesses quickly erode her youthful idealism, and as her best friend Greta (Katharina Schüettler) aspires to become a famous singer, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor (Ludwig Trepte) attempts to survive by blending in with the Polish Resistance.
