When Tragedy Struck is a concept album based around songs of sorrow (hardly a surprise for a country album), but whilst there is an air of melancholy across all eleven tracks, Hank Snow still manages to inject the whole proceedings with a degree of variety. Whilst the subject matter of the songs covers such heart pulling events as the death of children, the death of pets and abandonment, the atmosphere is lifted by the quality of the performances, most notably Hank Snow's own vocals. If the eleven songs present an overwhelming sense of doom, there is always Hank on hand to turn it around and lift the mood.
