...Still showing his touch for garrulous, hair-splitting conversation, Mr. Smith engages his characters in a bright spirited demonstration of just how difficult modern love can be...

Rating: 3.5/4 -- The performances are universally strong. The goateed Affleck makes for a particularly sympathetic protagonist; he has the looks and confidence of a lady-killer, but nagging befuddlement and vulnerability are rarely far from the surface. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Even when its young, uncertain characters appear to be in danger of talking (and whining) themselves to death, there's something genuine and charmingly naive about their attempts to make sense of their feelings. Full Review
Seattle Times
Feb 7, 2014
Rating: 4/5 -- Chasing Amy represents a change in direction for Smith, with drama before gags. A chick flick for blokes. Full Review

As in Smith's debut film, Clerks, there's something about the scruffy Chasing Amy that breaks through the pretenses of more conventional movies. Full Review

Rating: 2/5 -- A reductive juncture in Smith's career compared to his more situationally-specific and fine-tuned predecessors, Clerks and Mallrats. Full Review

Product Description:

When handsome young comic book creator Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck) meets cute young comic book creator Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), romance seems preordained. But Holden is soon confronted with Alyssa's complex sexual history, as well as his friend and colleague Banky's (Jason Lee) conflicted and enraged response to the affair. Despite the seriousness of the issues, director Kevin Smith keeps the laughs coming, even as Holden goes through hell and grows up.
