Entertainment Reviews:
[T]he main characters are remarkably well-drawn....Shinkai and his animators have a way of turning even the most mundane details of architecture and commercial design into a staging ground for moments that are wondrous, exciting, and at times thrillingly beautiful.

...the need to belong and be loved are universal themes that Shinkai, an expert crafter of young, teenage love stories, explores very well in 'Weathering With You.'

All the pieces are in place for a charming tale of magical powers and the price of using them, and once again the ending revolves around an environmental disaster.
Hollywood Reporter
[The] plotlines ... seem to be on different planes altogether ... the characterizations are lazy archetypes and many points of tension are artificial. I still enjoyed it[.]

3 stars out of 4 -- WEATHERING WITH YOU,” Shinkai’s latest animated romantic-fantasy to be released in America, has the same spark of ingenuity and consistency of vision as his earlier work.

Slate
Although Weathering With You includes serious social issues about homelessness and the hazards of messing with the environment, ultimately this is a sweetly sentimental film where the biggest messages are about taking life-changing risks for true love.
