[I]t’s a kind of stealth home movie: a portrait of two generations of an immigrant family in the United States.

4 stars out of 4 -- As gripping as the movie is as a legal thriller, it's even more notable as a portrait of a community.

[A]s capable a piece of work as one would expect from James, juggling footage of the Sung family at home, at work, on conference calls, and on the streets of Chinatown; news reports; talking-head interviews; and voice-over reenactments of the Abacus trial, illustrated with courtroom sketches and interviews with a couple of the jurors.

The movie is diligent and, to a degree, absorbing -- a legal/business saga that’s also the story of a family in crisis.

Product Description:

A look at the Abacus Federal Savings Bank in New York's Chinatown, which became the only financial institution to be indicted after the 2008 economic meltdown. This documentary examines the possibility that the bank was made to act as a scapegoat when the U.S. government proved unwilling to press charges against larger institutions. Directed by Steve James (HOOP DREAMS).
