Telefilm suffers from indulgent writing and, of all things, from the ordinariness of the characters.

Product Description:
Philip Saville directs a star-studded adaptation of Sue Miller's bestselling novel in the made-for-TV film FAMILY PICTURES. Happily married couple Lainey (Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston) and David Eberlin (Sam Neill) were living a perfect family life in 1950s suburbia when their youngest son Randall (Jamie Harrold) was diagnosed with autism. Even though David worked as a successful psychiatrist, the stress of dealing with Randall's little-understood disorder placed an indelible strain on the marriage that prompted extramarital affairs, alcoholism, and eventual divorce. Decades later, the Eberlins' two other children, emotionally stunted photographer Nina (Kyra Sedgwick) and dysfunctional older brother Mack (Dermot Mulroney), confront their family's traumatic past--and how it shaped their own damaged psyches--when Nina comes home for a visit and rummages through a box of old family photographs. Poignant and cathartic, FAMILY PICTURES offers an emotional study of domestic tragedy and its impact on the family dynamic.
