Film Comment
[A] subtle and thrilling love story, at once unsentimental in its realistic assessment of women’s circumstances and almost utopian in its celebration of the freedom that is nonetheless available to them.

Product Description:
In eighteenth-century Bretagne, a young woman named Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) must sit for a portrait that will be used to entice potential suitors. She repeatedly refuses to sit for any artist until the commission is offered to a Marianne (Noémie Merlant), a young painter. In an effort to secure Héloïse's trust, Marianne poses as Héloïse's lady's maid. However, Marianne soon discovers that she is developing feelings for her subject. French filmmaker Céline Sciamma writes and directs.
