The film feels determinedly old-fashioned, awash in a hypnotic ambience that's only occasionally punctured by violence. Like his father, Perkins makes his jolts count. Full Review

Rating: 4.5/5 -- Deserves to be studied in terms of its visuals and learned from by those who write and want to learn how to tell a story with minimal, haunting dialogue. Full Review

The characters are too underdeveloped to leave an impression. Full Review

Perkins builds layer after layer of dread, so that when an explosion finally occurs, it’s almost a twisted relief. He shows a lot of patience for a first-time director.

Yes, it's a horror movie (the murder scenes suggest that the director has watched "Psycho" more than once), but even its most brutal acts pulse with inchoate sadness. Full Review

Rating: 2/4 -- The young leads are all uniformly excellent, but they're stuck in a film that doesn't seem to know what to do with them. Full Review

Product Description:

Two female students (Kiernan Shipka and Lucy Boynton) are haunted by devilish forces while stranded at their Catholic prep school over winter break. Meanwhile, a mysterious hospital escapee (Emma Roberts) charts a course toward the school, and ends up getting a ride from a grieving, middle-aged couple (James Remar and Lauren Holly). Oz Perkins made his directorial debut with this horror feature, which received its world premiere at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.
