Newman's handling of the outdoor scenes, especially those involving work, is -- like his own acting -- restrained but powerfully evocative. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/4 -- Kesey's 600-plus-page novel would have made a fine six-hour mini-series, and it's a tribute to scenarist Gay that he managed to condense that much material into under two hours. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- It's not a classic, in the sense of being perfectly formed. But the craft work is one of a kind. Full Review

The result is rather good -- a sort of contemporary 'western' in the timber territory. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Newman starts tunneling under the material, coming up with all sorts of things we didn't quite expect, and along the way he proves himself as a director of sympathy and a sort of lyrical restraint. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Paul Newman makes his directorial debut in the sweeping saga Sometimes a Great Notion. Based on the best-selling novel about a two-fisted Oregon lumber family, the story focuses on a family that bucks their close-knit timber community in order to deliver a shipment of logs in defiance of a strike. In the process, one man is killed, the family patriarch Henry (Henry Fonda) is injured, and the eldest son Hank (Paul Newman) almost loses his wife (Lee Remick) to his half brother (Michael Sarrazin). Filled with complex characters and issues that still resonate today, Sometimes a Great Notion is an intense portrait of life set against the backdrop of logging.
