Made at a time when racial discrimination was as much a part of the fabric of American life as apple pie, this is an early stab by Hollywood at countering racism. Full Review

Rating: C+ -- This is a groundbreaking film despite its absurdly stiff way at looking at how blacks and whites interact. Full Review

Rating: 1/4 -- Pinky is nothing more than 1949's Crash: a film that doesn't deal with race so much as it pays lip service to race while being racist in ways likely unexamined by all involved. Full Review

Rating: 4/4 -- This is a mature film, with great respect for the humanity of people who are able to transcend social barriers and care for one another. Full Review

Rating: B- -- Kazan's liberal tale of a black girl passing as white is rather simple and Jeanne Crain is weak in the lead, but it's worth seeing Zanuck's message picture for the strong acting of the two Oscar-nominated Ethels (Waters and Barrymore). Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

Pinky (Jeanne Crain), a black woman who works as a nurse in Boston, finds she is able to pass for white. Afraid her true heritage will be discovered, she leaves her white fiancé (William Lundigan) and returns home to Mississippi. There, she helps her ailing grandmother (Ethel Waters) by caring for her employer (Ethel Barrymore), an imperious plantation owner. When she names Pinky heiress to her estate, the community rises in resentment, triggering a sensational court trial.
