Entertainment Reviews:

The Raft ... revives the journey and the memories in a way that seems shockingly relevant at a time when no one on earth seems to get along.

[T]his was basically 'The Real World' meets 'Big Brother' with a little 'Bachelor in Paradise' before anyone ever heard of the term 'reality TV.'
Chicago Sun-Times
Favored with copious amounts of footage shot during the voyage, as well as Genovés' collected data and writings, Lindeen forged a riveting and illuminating study of the unscrupulous endeavor.

A risky and complex film, like the adventure that has inspired it. [Full Review in Spanish]

La Jornada
By constructing an alternative to this narrative and giving a voice to the wounded yet resilient people left in its wake, Lindeen brings empathy and perhaps something like justice to what would otherwise be nothing more than a sex raft.

Blinded by his ego, acting like the captain of the Bounty, Genoves apparently never realized the experiment was valuable and was yielding interesting if surprising results.

Their reminiscences are thoughtful and emotional -- their well-worn faces beautiful, weathered afterimages of the ones we see in the footage from 1973 -- and they expose the complicated power dynamics that emerged in the group, as well as an easy camaraderie that challenged Genovés’s hypothesis.
New York Times
Product Description:
In 1973, Mexican anthropologist Santiago Genovés concocted a plan that would put 10 willing participants on a raft that would undertake a 101-day trans-Atlantic voyage, all in the name of finding out how violence and sex play out when humans are confined in a small place. The documentary, directed by Marcus Lindeen, presents the story of Acali, the raft, and its occupiers through two timelines - the past and the present, and it uncovers new relationships and connections forged within the small confines of the craft that flew under Genovés' radar.
