Director Michelangelo Frammartino presents The Hole (Il Buco), the tale of the Piedmont Speleological Group's 1961 investigation of the Bifurto Abyss, discovering that it is the world's second deepest cave. At a time when the world is moving forward into industrialization, the docu-drama is set against this background of an ageless location frozen in time. Counterpointing this is an elderly shepherd, watching the group as his comparatively brief life approaches its close, and other locals who seem oblivious of the majesty, or at least whose lives go on despite it.
