TOMATOMETER
Attractively cast and handsomely mounted....It does give you a sense of Franklin as a historical figure, a crossover success story and a full-throttle, fur-draped diva.
New York Times
3 stars out of 4 -- [RESPECT] benefits from its shiny presentation as much as it benefits from a spectacular lead performance....Hudson is this film’s savior.
RogerEbert.com
[A]n intimate gift of love, rich in complexity, spirituality, Black pride and feminist grit rooted not in didactic speeches but in authentic experience. The ageless music, of course, is the galvanizing force, but it’s the personal struggle behind it that makes the story so affecting.
Hollywood Reporter
[T]his is the most layered, most complex, most formidable and most enthralling performance of her career. Hudson kills it in the performance numbers...
Chicago Sun-Times
[I]t delivers the added pleasure of hearing Hudson re-create Franklin’s key songs, from the early jazz standards she covered for Columbia to her reinvention of the Otis Redding single that lends the film its name.

Product Description:
In her directorial debut, Liesl Tommy directs Jennifer Hudson in this biopic about the renowned Queen of Soul – Aretha Franklin. A known civil rights activist aside from being an internationally-acclaimed R&B singer, Aretha's life is showcased starting from the days she was identified as a singing protégé. The story follows her journey from her childhood days of singing in her father's church until she grows up and dabbles in music, eventually meeting her first husband, songwriter and manager Ted White (Marlon Wayans), until she encounters the challenges and trappings of fame and fortune.
