Much of the movie is hard to bear, yet it never drags, thanks to the momentum that Barnard finds in the fable, and, above all, to the energy that she unleashes in her young leads.

A social-realist contemporary re-working of Oscar Wilde's children's tale of the same name, this film is unapologetically miserable, gritty, British cinema. And it's brilliant. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- Barnard's work with these two child actors is extraordinary, and she has written a lean script. Full Review

Rating: B -- "The Selfish Giant" is a story of dependence, damage and desperation, told with grit and grimy frankness. It's also a portrait of friendship born of need and emptiness, on the road to nowhere. Full Review

Rating: 7.8/10 -- Clearly inspired by Ken Loach's films and the work of Andrea Dunbar (her subject for The Arbor), The Selfish Giant is a simple, tragic and ultimately moving work. Full Review

Rating: 3/4 -- Ultimately, it's a sad, tough sit - but worth seeing for its gritty honesty and strong cast.

3.5 stars out of 4 -- Barnard fills out this subculture with a journalist's eye. The light, the soot, the fog, the way sun hits the sides of buildings...all bespeak great powers of observation.

Product Description:

Two young schoolboys find their close-knit friendship beginning to unravel as they fall under the spell of an unscrupulous scrap-dealer in this bleak drama based on the story by Oscar Wilde. Consummate outsiders both in school and in life, 13-year-old Arbor (Conner Chapman) and his best mate Swifty (Shaun Thomas) find their futures looking uncertain after being expelled from school. Despite their shared setback, both boys remain determined to provide for their families, even if it means performing shady jobs for local scrap-metal merchant Kitten (Sean Gilder). Meanwhile, despite Arbor's desperate attempts to impress and emulate his questionable new mentor, it's Swifty who truly interests the manipulative Kitten. As this sad reality slowly begins to dawn on Arbor, a deep divide opens between the troubled teen and his former best friend, paving the way for a tragedy that will affect the lives of all involved.
