This was a pivotal year for the band, with the release of two seminal acid rock albums, Surrealistic Pillow (February 1967) and After Bathing At Baxter s (November 1967). Jefferson Airplane also played at the Monterey Pop Festival on 17 June 1967. The bands rise was meteoric, from Bay area darlings to counter cultural icons in just two short years. As the only band to play the big three rock festivals (Monterey, Woodstock, 16 August 1969, and the ill-fated Altamont Speedway Free Concert, 6 December 1969), Jefferson Airplane s status as rock legends is forever assured.
