MARDI GRAS IN BATON ROUGE is a collection of previously unreleased material recorded in Baton Rouge and Memphis during the 1970s. The CD contains 5 bonus tracks.
Personnel: Professor Longhair (vocals, piano); Snooks Eaglin (guitar); Alvin Batiste (tenor saxophone); Edward "Kidd" Jordan (baritone saxophone); Willie Singleton, Clyde Kerr (trumpet); Will Harvey Jr., George Davis (bass); Shiba, Joseph "Zigaboo" Modiste (drums).
Compilation producers: James Austin, Don Snowden.
Recorded at Deep South Recorders, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in September 1971; Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee in June 1972. Includes liner notes by Don Snowden.
Some of the earliest sides from Longhair's rediscovery period (1971-72), featuring a lot of tunes inexorably associated with him through previous versions and a few ("Jambalaya," "Sick and Tired") that weren't. An added bonus is the magical presence of guitarist Snooks Eaglin, whose approach is every bit as singular as the Professor's was. ~ Bill Dahl
