Entertainment Reviews:
...This poetic, evocative film version of the famous novel by Michael Ondaatje circles down through layers of mystery until all of the puzzle in the story have been solved...
Chicago Sun-Times
Whenever the movie's design seems too elaborate, too remote, it's the rare detail of these performances that redeems it.

The Spectator
...Respectable, intelligent....With its exotic, tapestry-like backgrounds, this is a picture of resplendently textured, sensuous surfaces...
Variety
Its wit, sophistication and artistry never are at odds with the fundamental pull of a powerful love story that out-Zhivagos Doctor Zhivago because it respects love's mysteries, admits it doesn't know the heart's boundaries.

Could this possibly be the Casablanca of the late 20th century?

Seattle Times
This is a radical adaptation which transposes, re-assembles and deletes key elements of the novel to achieve a pure cinematic reinvent ion that is admirably adroit - and as distinctive a work of art as the book remains in its own right.

It's the sort of solemn production that is often mentioned as an Academy Award contender. This says less about the quality of the film than it does about its self-consciously lofty tone and its sense of self-importance.

Product Description:
THE ENGLISH PATIENT is an epic, sweeping adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's richly layered, WWII-era novel chronicling two periods in the life of European explorer Count Laszlo Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), whose torrid affair with a colleague's wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) is countered by the beginning of the war, allegations of Nazi sympathies, and disfiguring injuries. The patient's stay at the ruins of an Italian monastery under the care of an emotionally injured French-Canadian nurse (Juliette Binoche, who won an Oscar for the role) serves as a framing device for his intriguing story. Academy Award winner Anthony Minghella directs this film that is at once incredibly modern and a well-crafted throwback to classic Hollywood epics of yesteryear.
