Entertainment Reviews:
On the whole, "Susan Slept Here" remains as familiar as a summer breeze, but not nearly as refreshing.

One scene finds Debbie Reynolds using the golden head of the trademarked Oscar statuette as a makeshift hammer to crack walnuts. In Hollywood, that may have been as shocking as the sight of the desecrated statue of the Virgin Mary in 'The Exorcist.'

This started life as a Broadway comedy and remains very theatrical, despite Tashlin's efforts to goose it into life ...

Some of the gags about 50s Hollywood are priceless (among them a parody of Gene Kelly's dream ballets).

It's a surprisingly bad outing considering all the talent involved.

Like the rest of Tashlin's mid-'50s showbiz satires, SUSAN SLEPT HERE is both naughty and nice, affectionate and cutting...
A.V. Club
Hollywood pictures, I still doggedly maintain, are slowly improving on the average, but I couldn't clinch the argument by citing the present specimen. It's a coy, leering and overdrawn comedy.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Screenwriter Mark Christopher gets a Christmas present that isn't on his Santa list: a 17-year-old delinquent named Susan, deposited in his bachelor pad by a cop pal who doesn't want to see the kid spend Christmas behind bars. Touched by Susan's plight, Mark decides there's only one way to keep her out of juvie: marry her in name only and get an annulment when she comes of age. But after a Vegas elopement, Susan isn't so sure she wants to be the ex-Mrs. Christopher. Dick Powell (in his last film role before devoting himself to a hugely successful TV career) and Debbie Reynolds play the (maybe) mismatched couple in a big-hearted romantic comedy from animator-turned-director Frank Tashlin that makes merry use of its Yuletide setting.

A light comedy about a writer who receives an unexpected Christmas present...custody of an 18-year old girl. Academy Award Nominations: Best Sound Recording, Best Song ("Hold My Hand").
