Until this moment we cannot be certain that the movie is going to employ every cliche of antebellum melodrama.

Viewed with fresh eyes, it can credibly be seen as revisionist history of a particularly savage kind.
AV Club
Embarrassing and crude.

This is a deeply depressing film. The main problem is that shock value is the centerpiece, so the theme of slavery is just a vehicle for horrific gore and interracial sex.

At least offers no tears for the demise of the good ole days in Dixie.

Mandingo is racist trash, obscene in its manipulation of human beings and feelings, and excruciating to sit through.

Product Description:
This overheated melodrama tells the story of a proud slave-owning family in the antebellum South and their eventual descent into adultery, incest, and sexual congress with those of other races. There's a Southern belle who's a panting nymphomaniac, a white man who craves African flesh -- and every black male is a well-endowed sexual stallion. Louisiana plantation life around 1840 is the setting for this racy drama based on the book by Kyle Onstott.
