[R]edeemed by the performances of Ann-Margret and Oliver Reed, interesting cameos from Elton John and Tina Turner, and a stylish sense of design.

Rating: 1.5/4 -- Fans of the Who beware. Ken Russell applies his rococo outpourings to Pete Townshend's rock opera and botches not only the visuals but the fine score. Full Review

Rating: 6/10 -- Despite classic, controversial scenes being cemented in pop culture, Tommy, on the whole, is a brash whack of chaotic clutter - a vivacious mess that teeters on incoherence before slumping into a claggy, monotonous finale. Full Review

This is both the movie in which [Russell] is most faithful to the ideas and tone of his material, and one of his very worst films. Full Review

[I]t's still a powerful experience, musically and visually....The music has the ferocity of a Who live performance... -- Grade: B+

One thing is sure: there has never been a movie musical quite like Tommy, a weird, crazy, wonderfully excessive version of The Who's rock opera. Full Review

Product Description:

Director Ken Russell's vibrant, hyperactive version of the Who's classic rock opera tells the story of a boy (Roger Daltrey) rendered deaf, dumb, and blind by the sight of his father's murder. His psychedelic journey through a maze of abusive relatives and strange "cures" eventually leads to enlightenment and sainthood. The film is based on guitarist Pete Townshend's stage opera, and features a star-studded cast that includes Ann-Margret, Oliver Reed, Elton John, Jack Nicholson, and Tina Turner.
