Rating: 4/5 -- Crawford is always mesmerizing, steely and teary as she is manipulated, accused of murder and circled by men who are stolid...crass...or emollient. Full Review

All this is good melodrama and fair entertainment, but it is much closer to the waltz-time schmalz of Kathleen Norris than to the fox-trot brass of James M. Cain. Full Review

Product Description:

A potent mixture of melodrama and film noir, and one of the finest "women's films" of all time--featuring a standout performance by Joan Crawford. The story begins as the police interrogate Mildred Pierce, a wealthy restaurateur, after finding her second husband shot to death. In flashback, we see Mildred's life: her obsession with Veda, her selfish oldest daughter; her troubled first marriage, which ended in divorce; the tragic death of her younger child. Left with only Veda, Mildred determined to become successful in order to give her the best of everything -- and she succeeded brilliantly. But the harder Mildred worked, the more the patrician Veda despised her. Now the moment of truth has come: will Mildred once again sacrifice herself to protect her child... from being convicted of murder' Adapted from the novel by James M. Cain. Academy Award Nominations: 6, including Best Picture, Best (Adapted) Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress--Eve Arden and Ann Blyth. Academy Awards: Best Actress--Joan CrawFord.

Mildred Pierce- Joan Crawford's Greatest Performance! Movie Lover: from BRONX, NY US -- January, 29, 2018

Mildred Pierce is a classic! Among women's films per se, it might be the best! Joan Crawford, once considered box office poison, turned her whole career around with this film! Joan was so good in this role that she won her only Oscar! Interestingly enough, her tenure at Warner Brothers produced her best films in my opinion! Check out films like
Possessed and The Damned Don't Cry to understand what i am talking about! Mildred Pierce has been revived with a HBO production starring Kate Winslet which is very good but it does not beat the original! Mildred Pierce is Joan Crawford with no mention of any wire hangers!
