3 stars out of 4 -- [B]oth silly and fun. Most of the film is genuinely atmospheric, thanks especially to the omnipresent construction noises that surround the house, like hammers on chisels, or saws into wood planks.

At this point in her career, Helen Mirren gets to dress like Marilyn Manson's dresser doily and yell at the ghost of a confederate soldier any time she pleases. The biggest problem with Winchester is it's nowhere near trashy enough to be captivating.
