Rating: 3.5/5 --
Broad appeal with Long Shot as it plays to the Seth Rogen fan base, the rom com watchers, and anyone that enjoys political comedies. It's smarter and funnier than you'll want to give it credit for.

The way Long Shot differentiates itself from the sexist sitcom cliche is by exploring the difficulty men have in ceding power to women, even if-perhaps especially if-the women are clearly more skilled and intelligent.

A fun date night movie which offers viewers a step above the typical rom-com fare that has most women swooning. You can do far worse than to spend your time and money on.

Though it lacks a certain edge, Long Shot is a tight, funny, and warm comedy with a ton of heart and two fantastic performances at its center.

Description by OLDIES.com:
Beautiful Martha Sharon watches helplessly as a disastrous string of bad luck at the track causes her uncle Henry to lose everything - his horses, his beloved farm and his fortune. Henry Sharon has been swindled by a crooked rival, Lew Ralston, who is paying Sharon's jockeys big money to throw their races. Martha joins forces with track veteran Jeff Clayton to train her "secret weapon," a thoroughbred that breaks speed records every time he runs. They manage to get their horse entered in the big race at Santa Anita, where Lew Ralston, believing he has a sure thing, is bound to bet his entire fortune on his own pony.
Character actor Gordon Jones gets a rare leading role and he makes the most of it, in this excellent but rarely seen racing saga. Jones had a busy career in supporting roles beginning in the 30s and continuing through the golden age of television, but is probably best remembered as Mike the Cop from the "Abbott and Costello Show". In The Long Shot Jones get strong support from beautiful young Marsha Hunt and veteran lovable old man Harry Davenport.
Product Description:
A racetrack melodrama, THE LONG SHOT features Marsha Hunt and Gordon Jones as trainers of a thoroughbred horse. Despite the rivalries of their parents, the couple prepares to jointly enter the Santa Anita handicap. The odds are against their entry, but Hunt and Jones have every confidence of winning. Just before the starting bugle, gangsters intrude, demanding that the trainers throw the Big Race. Even those audiences of 1939 who anticipated the outcome (it wasn't hard) were satisfied with THE LONG SHOT, one of the more engaging productions from the short-lived Grand National production company.
