Max Carlyle (Wesley Snipes) has it all: a happy marriage, children and a successful career. Until one night while on a trip to New York City, a chance encounter leads to a passionate affair with a beautiful, seductive and very married woman (Nastassja Kinski). On his return home, vowing to forget the scorching tryst, he slowly begins to withdraw from the people closest to him.

One year later, Max returns to New York with his wife (Ming-Na Wen), to comfort his ailing friend (Robert Downey Jr.). As fate would have it, he finds himself face-to-face with his alluring lover and her conservative husband (Kyle MacLachlan), only to confront the unexpected consequences that erupt from a one night stand.
