Entertainment Reviews:
This is a movie about restraint, which is exactly what its star demonstrates throughout. -- Grade: B
A.V. Club
Rating: 4/5 --
Joe is a gripping drama with a powerful moral core, that has sympathy for those trying to make their way alone through the world, but doesn't give them much of a chance.

Rating: 4/5 --
With an air of an old Jim Thompson novel, Joe is a grungy thriller with a surprisingly tender heart.

Mr. Cage has stripped his performance bare of anything that might smack of a familiar star presence; what's left feels freshly discovered, for him and for us.

4 stars out of 5 -- An understated Nicolas Cage...anchors a superbly realised film
Empire
Rating: 2.5/5 --
Cage is the only actor for whom a more reined-in performance works against them. If we are going to a Nicolas Cage movie for any reason, it sure as hell isn't for restraint.

While still small scale, JOE is a muscular film, its storytelling deeper, its setting striking, its acting resonant.

Product Description:
David Gordon Green's JOE stars Nicolas Cage as the title character, the foreman of a work crew hired to poison trees before they are cleared from land owned by people who plan to develop it. One day, 15-year-old Gary (Tye Sheridan) arrives at the worksite looking for a job for both himself and his alcoholic, shiftless father. Joe hires them both, but the self-destructive dad is quickly told never to return. Gary, however, earns his keep, and soon he begins to think of Joe as a father figure. However, Joe has a prison record, and a problem keeping his explosive anger in check, and when a local man develops a grudge against him, both Gary and Joe must take a stand. JOE screened at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.
