Mamoulian's film holds together even if it can't completely overcome all its clichés.

Despite a compromised version and imposed happy ending, Odets' sports melodrama still holds emotional and dramatic power due to the acting of William Holden, then 21, in a role that catapulted him to overnight stardom and Stanwyck as the dame from Newark

Description by OLDIES.com:
Born in Brooklyn in 1907, Barbara Stanwyck was a Hollywood superstar for over six decades. Experience one of her greatest films ever, Golden Boy. Newcomer William Holden became an overnight sensation in the role of a young violinist who turns to boxing and finds himself torn between his two occupations - especially when seductive Stanwyck slinks into his life. Based on the hit play by legendary Clifford Odets, directed by innovative genius Rouben Mamoulian, and featuring a superb supporting cast including Adolphe Menjou (Paths of Glory), Lee J. Cobb (On The Waterfront), Joseph Calleia (Touch of Evil) and Sam Levene (Brute Force), Golden Boy packs just as big a punch today as it did when it came out in 1939, widely considered to be the greatest movie ever.

Golden Boy- Golden Classic!

1939 is considered to be the best year for the movie making industry and Golden Boy ranks up there with the best of them! This rag to riches story stars Barbara Stanwyck and William Holden as they both deal with each other in the boxing business! William Holden became a overnight sensation from this movie thanks to Barbara Stanwyck who demanded that Mr. Holden be in the movie or else she would be gone! I will never forget the Oscar ceremony in 1982 (I believe) when the both of them were on stage together and William Holden thanking Barbara Stanwyck for their friendship and work on this movie! Finally, when Mr. Holden passed on, Barbara Stanwyck remarked that she loved him very much and would always be her "Golden Boy" for life!
