Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman provide great color in character roles.

Lush, star-studded movies like The Talented Mr. Ripley teach us to yearn: for Europe, for charisma, for nice furniture and idler times. The Talented Mr. Ripley also teaches us how poisonous that longing can be. Full Review

...The performances here are stunning, with on-the-money turns by supporting actors Philip Seymour Hoffman...and Cate Blanchett...

Minghella puts us inside Ripley's head, inviting us to share his envy and giddy excitement even as we recognize his warped need to be someone he's not. Full Review

It's a gorgeously unsettling film. You can hide in the shadows, but luminescence exposes who you are, and the only escape is into another identity.

This is certainly no fast-paced nail-biting thriller, but much rather a slow-paced intriguing drama very reminiscent of Hitchcock films.

“Mr. Damon gives a remarkable performance as the endlessly needy and mendacious Tom Ripley, and he’s surrounded by a splendid cast...”

Product Description:

Based on Patricia Highsmith's novel of the same name, Anthony Minghella's moody follow-up to his Oscar-winning THE ENGLISH PATIENT concerns Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), a poor New Yorker, who is sent to Italy by the wealthy Mr. Greenleaf in order to bring back his spoiled son, Dickie (an Oscar-nominated Jude Law). Once in Italy, Tom charms his way into the home of Dickie and his girlfriend Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow), where he begins to get a taste of wealthy living. When Tom begins to wear out his welcome, he takes drastic actions to ensure that he will never have to return to the life that he left behind.
