Straub and Huillet invite us to ponder, as the music washes over us, what we can know and what we can't - and to wonder at what here is also false. Full Review

While the film is mostly focused on the music and the settings in which it was originally played, Anna Magdalena's voice guides us, providing the film's peculiar, illusive texture. Full Review

[The film] disregards most conventions of costume drama to ask some very human questions about history, what it takes to be an artist, and what movies can tell us about ourselves.

Revival of this radically minimalist 1968 biopic should pique wider interest in the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet. Full Review

Product Description:

This unique biographical twist on Johann Sebastian Bach's life chooses to focus on his musical achievements instead of his private life. Classical virtuoso Gustav Leonhardt plays Bach in his only performance as an actor, while narration is provided by Christiane Lang, who plays Bach's wife, Anna. While a few events in Bach's life seep into the narrative, THE CHRONICLE OF ANNA MAGDALENA mostly offers viewers the opportunity to bask in the glow of the great composer's music, with Leonhardt providing some fine interpretations of his works throughout.
