Product Description:

This quintessential release features one of John Lee Hooker's finest albums: The Big Soul of John Lee Hooker. It was recorded in 1962 and released early the next year by Vee Jay Records. On The Big Soul of John Lee Hooker, the bluesman explores the soul and Motown sounds of the early '60s, while maintaining the essence of his own bluesy style. His gritty voice is as heavily emotive and unshakable as ever on these recordings. He is backed here by the seed of one of the most successful studio bands of all time, which would later be known as The Funk Brothers, as well as by a wonderful female backing vocal group. Although The Vandellas were believed to have been responsible for the sweet backing vocals, recent evidence suggests that they were actually recorded by Mary Wilson, from the original Supremes, and The Andantes (as stated in Wilson's autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme). This masterpiece has been remastered and packaged in this very special collector's edition, which also includes, as a bonus, the chart hit Boom Boom, one of Hooker's most identifiable and enduring tunes.
