Dick Powell is a rough and tough military intelligence officer assigned to investigate the murder of two gold-shipment guards. His interrogations lead him to Jane Greer, the beautiful but ruthless owner of a gambling house. Powell learns that she is actually the brains behind the bandits who are terrorizing the region. He gains Greer's admiration and confidence by whupping her husky bouncer. He then performs some jobs for her, all the while gathering the evidence he needs to put her and her lawless gang behind bars.
