Rating: B- -- Not one of Billy Wilder's strong features, this biopic of the ace flyer is too conventional, lacking the helmer's more characteristic humor, irony, cynicism. Full Review

Rating: 3/5 -- Fascinating, albeit tedious, telling of the Lindbergh flight.

...in the end, the long film becomes almost as tedious as the flight that inspired it. Full Review

It's quite engrossing, with the period trappings lovingly presented. Full Review

...Billy Wilder's most underrated film...

Hollywood has come up with a solid movie about the exploit, with Stewart plausibly depicting the Lone Eagle. A lengthy colloquy with a stowaway horsefly is one of the very few false notes in a basically honest and stirring narrative. Full Review

Description by OLDIES.com:

On May 21, 1927, the world changed. "Lucky Lindy" landed outside Paris and people who previously talked about the limitations of air travel suddenly dreamed of its limitless possibilities. The Spirit of St. Louis is six-time Academy Award winner Billy Wilder's recreation of the struggles and success of Charles A. Lindbergh, the pioneering flyboy who, like test pilots and astronauts to follow later, had the "right stuff" of aviation heroism. Lindbergh fan James Stewart, himself a pilot, sought the role -- and was initially turned down. But his persistence paid off, as Stewart added Lindy to his gallery of indelible portrayals of American heroes. He and Wilder together manned the cockpit of a stirring epic entertainment.

Product Description:

Billy Wilder's loving biographical portrait of Charles Lindbergh focuses on the flying legend's courageous crossing of the Atlantic in a single-engine plane. Flashbacks show Lindbergh (James Stewart) learning his craft in the air force, barnstorming, and carrying mail in dangerously rickety early airplanes.
