Dark, claustrophobic and depressing, but it's too destructive for its own good.

What is it with first-time Australian filmmakers and ultraviolent true-crime movies about thuggish underclass families?
AV Club
[The film] builds into a multipronged horror effort....The film is unflinching, but doesn't sensationalize its content, which makes it all the more disturbing.
Movieline
The pure terror of rural mundaneness and geographical remoteness turning savage and deadly is ultimately the most stirring and chilling notion presented by Snowtown.

4 stars out of 5 -- [T]he film's combination of raw performances, unobtrusive, over-the-shoulder cinematography and unflinching darkness will snare even the strong-stomached like snake food.

Rating: 3.5/4 --
The film is a chilling study of an evil, dominant personality and his victims.

3.5 stars out of 4 -- The film is a chilling study of an evil, dominant personality and his victims. It works primarily through an astonishingly good performance by Daniel Henshall as Bunting.

Product Description:
A harrowing account of the true crime story that shocked Australia, Justin Kurzel's SNOWTOWN follows an impressionable teenager as he falls under the spell of a charismatic serial killer and gets hopelessly drawn into a vicious cycle of violence and murder. Single mother Elizabeth Harvey (Louise Harris) lives in a cramped house in the northern suburbs of Adelaide with her four young sons. When Elizabeth's current boyfriend reveals himself to be a pedophile, charismatic newcomer John Bunting (Daniel Henshall) drives him out of the neighborhood while laying on the charm, and in the process he captures the attention of her teenage son Jamie (Lucas Pittaway). But as Jamie gets closer to John, he learns that the amiable stranger's quick smile masks a dark secret.
