The pop culture portions of the miniseries may be the most enticing element of Black America Since MLK because these contain the African-American faces with which mainstream America is most familiar.

As worthy, intelligent, sweeping and absolutely necessary as this four-hour film is - and caveat emptor, I've only seen the first two - "Black America" still often feels like a survey.
