... von Trier has finally written troubled women who aren't completely defined by their neuroses. "Melancholia" is a welcome surprise. Full Review

Rating: 3.5/5 -- Despite its sci-fi premise and air of apocalyptic doom, Melancholia, surprisingly enough, is a small film, locating both its terror and its humor. Full Review

Its apocalyptic vision is encouraging in its hopelessness; its star, Kirsten Dunst, luminous in her anguish and devastation.

"Melancholia" isn't an angry film, just one that doesn't offer anything in the way of comfort, except for the satisfaction that can be taken away from great art and appreciation of von Trier as the rare filmmaker not to compromise. Full Review

Rating: 4/5 -- May suffer from being overlong and thematically suffocating, but its inherent visual beauty, frank disposition and strikingly veritable personification of melancholy certifies its effectiveness. Full Review

MELANCHOLIA is gorgeous to look at, deeply moody and atmospheric, and it's always in on its own grim little joke.

Rating: 4/5 -- Kirsten Dunst already won the best actress award at the last Cannes Film Festival, and the film is characterized by a tense plot, a specialty of Lars von Trier (Antichrist). [Full review in Spanish] Full Review

Product Description:

Lars Von Trier's MELANCHOLIA, a meditation on depression and the end of the world, stars Kirsten Dunst as an emotionally troubled newlywed named Justine, whose sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) throws her a lavish wedding party. While her lack of emotional stability begins to take a toll on Justine's new marriage as well as the party -- and old wounds are exposed -- Claire's wealthy husband John (Kiefer Sutherland) also knows a great deal about a planet that is on a possible collision course with Earth, further muddying the waters. The second half of the movie focuses on Claire, who ends up taking her sister in after the marriage collapses, and also begins to fear that John is hiding apocalyptically bad news. John Hurt and Charlotte Rampling co-star. MELANCHOLIA screened at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.
