3.5 stars out of 5 -- [I]t's original....In the hands of three such gifted farceurs as Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black, it's pretty close to perfection.

Rating: 3/5 -- If you can get past the obviously obscure subject matter, you'll find a really sweet film beneath. Full Review

It's like CITY SLICKERS remade for the Discovery Channel....The film salutes the oddly touching idea that no obsession is very rational. -- Grade: B-

If you're in the mood for some feathery fluff of the happy-sappy-and-not-wholly-unpleasant sort and need a break from snark, there is THE BIG YEAR.

Unfortunately, these comic geniuses are kept caged by the wan script and direction. The best gag in the film is the opening title card; the best joke, a throwaway by a day player.

Rating: B -- A very mild movie, but in the nicest sense of the word. Full Review

One of the most commendable things about THE BIG YEAR is its willingness to allow that your passions are your passions, and while the world may not comprehend them, that doesn't mean they have to be a source of unfair mockery.

Product Description:

Three fanatical bird-watchers (Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, Jack Black) spend an entire year competing to spot the highest number of species as El Nino sends an extraordinary variety of rare breeds flying up into the U.S., but they quickly discover that there are more important things than coming out on top of the competition. Director David Frankel (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, MARLEY AND ME) teams with screenwriter Howard Franklin to adapt author Mark Obmascik's 1998 book of the same name.
